Friday, March 18 was a highly anticipated day in Mercersburg. Reese was coming home!
Finally some good news after a heavy, difficult stint locally. News spread down main street, through the schools, and into the churches. The news became part of the fabric of our lives in Mercersburg this past week.
Driving into town Friday morning, it seemed every soul was out painting the town purple. Fast Ink got banners to local businesses. M M P & W Volunteer Fire Company decked out their buildings and their fleet sat ready for the big meet up. Preparation was everywhere. Overwhelming. In a word. Tears welled up and the throat caught up in itself bit. We all had the exact same thought:
What a great little town.
The tears rolled by with Reese several hours later. After giddy, happy chatter of anticipation, silence fell. There was no way to stop the floodgates. A brief, beautiful moment of joy we all shared.
Broken up with:
“Haha, look at you!” “Huh? What are you talking about? Have you seen your soaked collar?” “Mommy, the paint, it’s running all down your cheeks.”
The purple colors of Lenten have been hanging in churches. Deep purple symbolic of pain and suffering. Lent encouraging self examination, prayer, sacrifice, and acts of love.
How fitting that Reece Purple would be so prolific.
